The Mountain Hardwear Ascent Ventigaiter features Mountain Hardwears patented roll-back upper panel, which zips open revealing a mesh vent to keep you cool when the climbing heats up.
Great Gaitors. Not up to mountaineering
Let me first say that
these are great trekking gaiters. They are not waterproof above where the mesh
(venting) panel starts but that's to be expected. They give you the
waterproofness of a short gaiter, and protect from scree etc like a higher
gaiter. The venting panel is great for summer hiking, especially climbing dry
Rocky Mountains (like South Sister in Oregon) because they keep the rocks out
and vent better than any gaiter out there. That being said, leave these gaiters
at home if youÆre going to be wearing crampons. These gaiters will not stand up
to ANY crampon encounters, I sliced right through them with ease (not on purpose
of course). Don't be fooled by the "ASCENT" in the title, they must be talking
about hills, not glacier mountains. Other than that these are great gaiters -
I'm glad I have them but I had to buy a new pair for mountaineering which is
what I bought them for. They do have burlier versions that work pretty well for
mountaineering but by then mostly don't have vents, besides Black diamond GTX
front point gaiters or OR crocodiles are simply better gaiters for
mountaineering. I now use the Black Diamonds which have taken some serious abuse
and are in perfect condition. So in summary, great trekking gaiter, I highly
recommend them for that, just don't fool yourself about crampon use with them.
