The Raven's 17-4 investment-cast stainless steel head was designed with function and beauty in mind. Positive clearance pick tapers back to a wide head platform that's wasp-waisted with finger notches on either side for comfort and a secure grip. This also makes for fast, smooth hand rotation when going into a self-arrest. The classic curved adze is sharp as hell and chops steps, clears snow and blasts ice with ease. A sleek 7075-T6 pierced and drawn shaft cuts weight to a minimum without sacrificing strength. A 17-4 investment cast spike has two braking functions while glissading, a narrow profile for speed and a wide profile for shutting it down.

Product Reviews ...
Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe is the lightweight axe of choice for hikers, climbers, and ski/snowboard mountaineers who need an axe that wont weigh them down.
Light and functional axe for general mountaineering, not suitable for
technical ice climbing
My wife, my son and I used the Raven Ice Axe in the
Alps on gentle to moderate ice slopes and moderate to steep snow slopes. This
axe is very light, which helps when every ounce counts. The shape of the head
makes holding the axe in the self-arrest position much more natural and less
tiresome. In my opinion, this tool is not suitable for technical ice climbing.
We tried it on steep ice slopes for practice and discovered that the shaft is
much too slippery for any serious work.
Popular Ice Axe
We had
rented the Raven to practice and climbed Mt. Baldy above L.A. in the winter.
Bought the Axe from you after renting locally. Attempted Shasta last weekend and
about 60-70% of us novice climbers had the Raven. Very light and comfortable.
Handled well on self-arrest.
